Comparison of mid motors and hub motors:

1. From the view of its own structure:

The mid-mounted motor's own structure is much more complicated than that of the hub motor. In addition to the motor, the mid-mounted motor also needs clutch, drive shaft, drive chain, transmission, differential and other components to output power to the rear wheels. The complex structure of its own causes the internal space of the mid-mounted motor to be large and its own weight to be far more than that of the hub motor, which also increases the difficulty of installation and maintenance, thus increasing the maintenance cost of the mid-mounted motor.

2. From the overall layout and riding experience:

The advantage of the mid-mounted motor is that it can keep the front and rear weight balance of the whole car as much as possible, and will not affect the shock absorber action, the motor also bears less impact on the road, so in off-road handling, stability, passability and other aspects are better than with the hub motor models. Mid-motor models can play a front-to-back balancing role during riding because of the center of gravity, while in outdoor off-road or encountering bumpy roads, the balanced center of gravity layout can evenly distribute the weight on the front and rear shock absorbers, with better filtering effect. Therefore, most high-performance electric-assist models choose mid-motor.

As the hub motor is mounted inside the hub, it will cause the center of gravity to shift in a certain sense, resulting in an imbalance of weight between the front and rear of the body. In normal city commuting riding and flat road riding, the effect is more or less the same as mid-mounted motor riding. However, on mountain cross country, outdoor excursions and bumpy roads, the rider needs to deal with greater inertial impact due to the shift in center of gravity.

3. From the kit adaptability point of view:

Mid-mounted motors require less body design than hub motors, and their high degree of integration can reduce unnecessary wire and tube exposure, and carry more diverse accessories than hub motors. Hub motor models are not as diversified as mid-mounted motor models in terms of kit adaptability, but their corresponding parts market also tends to be perfect, so hub motor models can basically meet individual needs in terms of kit adaptability. Therefore, with its mature design and relatively low price, the hub motor occupies half of the electric power market.

4. From the aspect of power output:

Compared with hub motors, the mid-mounted motor provides more bearing torque, better output efficiency and less power loss, and because the mid-mounted motor is closer to the human pedaling frequency, the power conversion rate of the mid-mounted motor is better under the same power supply. The wheel motor is not as efficient as the mid-mounted motor in terms of power output, but with the same power supply, the output of the wheel motor is more linear and softer, so there is no steep acceleration and the overall power output is more stable than that of the mid-mounted motor. This is the reason why most city commuter electric bikes choose hub motors.

In conclusion, hub motors and mid-mounted motors have different applications and advantages in different areas, and the specific difference lies in the matching models, so recognize your own needs to select a good electric-assisted bicycle for yourself.
